In our Key Stage One we have one Year One class and one Year Two class. These years are where we continue to build on the children’s strong foundation of the Early Years and develop resilient, thriving and independent learners. Our curriculum has been designed to encompass knowledge, the understanding of our local area and the wider world whilst providing pupils with skills they need to succeed. The topics have been designed and planned to build on previous knowledge and understanding whilst showing clear progression and links throughout subsequent year groups. Each year concepts are explored in more depth allowing for application of knowledge.

In Year One emphasis is given to early phonic skill acquisition and embedding writing and maths skills whilst supporting children to transition into a new learning environment. During Year One we gradually transfer from the Early Years Curriculum into the National Curriculum at a rate largely defined by each child’s maturity. Year One is an engaging, multisensory and highly practical learning environment. At Our Lady we always teach our curriculum and lessons to each child’s needs through a range of whole class, small group and targeted intervention teaching.

In Year Two we encourage children to work more independently, ultimately developing their maturity both educationally and emotionally. The curriculum design for based on two over-riding principles: a concentration on embedding and mastery of basic skills coupled with subject led acquisition of knowledge and core skills. In the summer term of Year Two we focus on helping our oldest Key Stage One children transition into Key Stage Two.
