Key Stage 2 Curriculum

Our Key Stage 2 consists of two phases. Lower Key Stage 2 (years 3 and 4) and Upper Key Stage 2 (year 5 and 6). Our curriculum has been designed to encompass knowledge, the understanding of our local area and the wider world whilst providing pupils with skills they need to succeed. Throughout Key Stage 2 we continue to build on the knowledge and skills children have previously learnt, embedding these further each year. In Key Stage 2 all children take responsibility for their own actions as individuals and learners.

In Year 3 children are continued to be support with the transition to Key Stage 2, building on independence and resilience as learners and individuals. We build upon the spelling rules, Mathematic rules and phonic knowledge taught in Key Stage One. Once these skills have been embedded the focus moves to cohesive writing, increasing in maturity and complexity, and deepening the understanding of how to solve four operation word problems. Throughout Year 4 children continue to work on their skills and knowledge acquisition. In Year 4 children can also attend their first residential visit. This allows all children to grow, engage in new and exciting activities whilst building self-confidence and self-belief.

In Years 5 and 6 demands upon the children for both working stamina and the precise application of skills taught in the years before is fostered and reinforced. During Years 5 and 6 children are given more opportunities to develop interests and their independence further through project work, class studies and extra-curricular activities.

In Year 6 time is spent preparing children for SATS but more so on preparing each child for the next stages in their education and providing them with the skills they need to succeed. This year is the biggest year for any child at primary school and we ensure that all children feel celebrated, supported and confident in their abilities. We aim to ensure each child leaves us at the end of Year 6 with the skills, knowledge and moral compass they need to succeed in their future education in the wider world.
