Pupil Leaders

At our school, we believe that every pupil should take an active role in becoming a responsible citizen. We do this through many exciting opportunities for pupils and empowering them to take ownership, develop leadership skills and contribute positively to our school and the wider community.

School Council: Our School Council is made up of two elected representatives from each class. They meet regularly to discuss ideas and suggestions for improving our community. The School Council helps to make decisions about school events, charity fundraisers, and other important matters. They are the voice of the pupils and work closely with teachers and staff to make our school a better place for everyone.

Eco Council: Our Eco Council is passionate about caring for the environment. They lead initiatives to reduce waste, promote recycling, and encourage eco-friendly practices throughout the community. From organizing litter picks to planting trees, the Eco Council is dedicated to making a positive impact on our planet. They inspire fellow pupils to be mindful of their environmental footprint and to take action to protect our natural world.

Buddies: Buddies are older pupils who support and mentor younger students, especially those who are new to the school or transitioning into a new year group. Buddies help younger children settle into school life, answer their questions, and provide friendship and support during playtimes and lunch breaks. They are role models who embody kindness, empathy, and inclusivity, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among all pupils.

Sports Leaders: Our Sports Leaders are enthusiastic about promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles. They assist teachers during PE lessons, support during sports events and encourage participation in sports and fitness activities. Sports Leaders demonstrate good sportsmanship, teamwork, and dedication, inspiring their peers to stay active and enjoy the benefits of exercise and sport.

Chaplaincy Team: The Chaplaincy Team is made up of Year 6 pupils. It plays a vital role in promoting spiritual and moral development within our school community. The Chaplaincy Team fosters a culture of respect, tolerance, and understanding. They lead collective worship sessions and support the Catholic Life of the school. The Chaplaincy Team embodies our school values of kindness and respect, nurturing a sense of spirituality and community spirit among pupils and staff alike.

At our school, we empower pupils to take on leadership roles and responsibilities, nurturing their talents, skills, and aspirations. Through teamwork, creativity, and dedication, our pupils make a positive difference in our school and beyond, shaping a brighter future for themselves and their peers.

Our School Council proudly led the organisation of this year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning, bringing our school community together in support of a truly important cause. With enthusiasm and teamwork, the pupils planned, promoted, and helped run the event—welcoming families, staff, and friends to enjoy delicious cakes, warm drinks, and good company. The event not only raised vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, but also reflected our school’s values of kindness, respect, and community spirit. It was a wonderful example of pupil leadership in action, and a reminder of the power of coming together to make a difference.

Chaplaincy Team Leading Our Community in Prayer

The Chaplaincy Team  took a leading role in our Community Mass, guiding our school in prayer and worship with reverence and confidence. The team prepared and delivered the readings, bidding prayers, and reflections, helping to create a truly meaningful celebration for pupils, staff, families, and parish members.

Their thoughtful contributions brought the liturgy to life and reminded us of the importance of pupil voice in our spiritual journey. It was a beautiful moment of unity and faith, and a wonderful example of how our children are living, learning, and growing through Jesus Christ and His Church.

This Harvest season, our Eco Council has taken the lead in a heartwarming campaign to support the Hitchin Pantry, a local community initiative that provides food to families in need. With a strong sense of purpose and compassion, the pupils have been encouraging donations of non-perishable food items from across the school community.

Their campaign reflects our school’s commitment to Catholic Social Teaching, especially the principles of solidarity, the common good, and option for the poor.

The food collected will be donated to Hitchin Pantry to help support local families, and the campaign has been a powerful reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. We are incredibly proud of our Eco Council for leading this initiative with such enthusiasm and care.

Year 6 Buddies Welcoming Our New Reception Children

This September, our wonderful Year 6 Buddies have been busy supporting our new Reception children as they begin their exciting journey at Our Lady School. With kindness, patience, and enthusiasm, the Year 6 pupils have helped their younger peers settle into school life—offering a friendly face, guiding them through routines, and being there to lend a helping hand during playtimes and transitions.

The Buddy system is a cherished tradition at Our Lady School, and this year’s group has truly embraced their role as role models and mentors. Their support has helped our Reception children feel safe, confident, and welcomed as part of our school family. It’s been heartwarming to see the friendships forming and the smiles shared across the playground and classrooms.

This initiative reflects our school values of being kind, safe, respectful, and reflective, and shows how older pupils can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 Buddies and grateful for the care and leadership they’ve shown.
